Badung, 2 September 2024 – President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, held a bilateral meeting with the President of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, in the Casablanca Room, Hotel Mulia Nusa Dua Bali, on Monday (2/9/2024). The meeting, held on the sidelines of the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF MSP) and the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF), marked an important moment in strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries, which have lasted for nearly six decades.
During the meeting, President Jokowi expressed his appreciation for President Boakai's attendance and emphasized the bilateral relationship between the two countries which has been strong for almost 60 years.
"Welcome to Indonesia, and thank you for Your Excellency's presence. The bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Liberia has been strong for nearly six decades, and I believe there is more potential that we can develop together," said President Jokowi.
The President then highlighted three key sectors for cooperation that could be strengthened between Indonesia and Liberia. One of these sectors is palm oil, which faces various challenges, from negative campaigns in the Western world to the discriminatory policies of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
"Indonesia continues to fight against these negative campaigns and hopes that Liberia will continue to support us. Indonesia is also ready to assist in capacity building in African countries, including Liberia," President Jokowi said.
The next area of cooperation is infrastructure. President Jokowi mentioned that Indonesia has many companies with extensive experience in infrastructure development, which are ready to collaborate with Liberia.
"Indonesia has many companies with extensive experience in infrastructure development, and we are ready to work with Liberia to support infrastructure development there," he added.
President Jokowi also expressed Indonesia's readiness to strengthen development cooperation with Liberia through various programs tailored to Liberia's needs. These include technical support, scholarships, and vocational training. "We’re ready to provide all to support development in Liberia," said the President.
The bilateral meeting is expected to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries and open up new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in the strategic areas discussed. Both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation for mutual progress in the future.
Accompanying the President at the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Minister of Investment/Head of Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Roeslani, and Minister of State Secretary Pratikno.
