Indonesia Intensifies Cooperation with Solomon Islands, Congo

Badung, 3 September 2024 — Indonesia will strengthen cooperation with the Solomon Islands and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly in addressing climate change and achieving sustainable development goals.

Suharso Monoarfa, the Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning and Head of the National Development Planning Agency (PPN/Bappenas), made the statement following bilateral meetings with delegations from the Solomon Islands and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF MSP) 2024 on Tuesday, 3 September 2024.

The Solomon Islands was represented by the Minister of National Planning and Development Coordination, Rexon Annex Ramofafia, and the Minister of Education and Human Resources Development, Tozen Leokana. Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was represented by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning and Development Aid Coordination, Guylain Nyembo Mbwizya. 

“Indonesia has continuously supported the Solomon Islands through various development programs since 2018, including the construction of a multifunctional stadium, pandemic COVID-19 response, and capacity building in the fisheries sector,” said Minister Suharso.

Indonesia also hopes to enhance cooperation in the blue economy and tourism sectors, notably in developing sustainable ecotourism, which is crucial for environmental conservation and improving local community welfare.

In his meeting with Guylain Nyembo Mbwizya, Minister Suharso emphasized Indonesia's commitment to strengthening global solidarity. As co-chairs of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC), both countries will share perspectives on the importance of population planning and management in national development strategies.

“Indonesia and Congo have significant opportunities to collaborate on developing new and renewable energy and electric mobility. We must harness the abundant natural resources in both countries to achieve the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 51 percent by 2045,” added the Minister of National Development Planning. 

The meetings also highlighted challenges related to green planning and reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to achieving sustainable development goals.

Indonesia hopes to continue exploring cooperation opportunities with the Solomon Islands and DRC, strengthening mutually beneficial bilateral relationships and contributing to global efforts to address climate change.
