Badung, 3 September 2024 – Several African countries such as Algeria, Sudan, and Morocco have expressed interest in learning about sustainable tourism and the management of Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) destinations.
This was stated by Deputy for Resources and Institutions at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf), Martini Mohamad Paham during a Press Conference related to the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF MSP) and the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) Joint Leaders Session 2024 at the Media Center, Nusa Dua, Bali, on Tuesday, 3 September.
“South Africa has expressed its interest in learning about MICE management, as it will host the G20 Summit in 2025. They want to learn from Indonesia's success in organizing the G20 Summit in 2022,” she said.
On that occasion, Martini also revealed that Indonesia’s initiative on creative economy or Promoting Creative Economy for Sustainable Development has been accepted by the United Nations (UN). The proposal was supported by 59 countries, including African countries, and became the first UN resolution specifically addressing the creative economy.
According to Martini, with the acceptance of the proposal, the UN will give more attention to the creative economy. "Each country will submit a report on the development of the creative economy to the UN," she said.
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) in a bilateral meeting during the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) has also agreed upon the establishment of cooperation in tourism with Zanzibar.
President of Zanzibar Hussein Ali Mwinyi directly expressed his desire to Indonesian Minister of Tourism Sandiaga Uno to immediately realize several agreements, one of which is sending their students to learn tourism development, particularly hospitality, from Indonesia.
The agreement, more concretely, is realized by Indonesia with the admission of African students at the Bali Tourism Polytechnic. “This is an opportunity considering that Zanzibar's economy is supported by 30 percent of tourism sector,” said Martini.
Previously, Monday 2 September, during his working visit to attend the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF-MSP) and the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) Joint Leaders Session 2024, in Nusa Dua, Bali, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno expressed the Indonesian government's commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation.
This commitment demonstrates Indonesia’s strengthening position as a prominent country insustainable creative economy development that opens up new opportunities for international cooperation, and contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). (Eko/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/SW/PR).
